Michigan lawmakers are calling on Canada to take more action to address wildfire smoke drifting over the border and creating hazardous air conditions for Americans. A joint letter was sent to the Canadian government by U.S. Representatives Jack Bergman, John James, Lisa McClain, and John Moolenaar, as smoke from wildfires north of the border crossed into the Upper Peninsula. The lawmakers argued that Canada has not done enough to address the issue of wildfire smoke and its effect on its neighbors to the south. There were 858 active fires across Canada on Thursday, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. The lawmakers stated that they are done accepting apologies in place of action and that the United States will look elsewhere and act on its own to protect its people if Canada does not manage its forests to prevent these fires.
